In Lana Stasek’s Voices Within, Bella: Beyond the Bark, Bella, a purebred beagle, begins life when she’s born inside a breeding barn. Sadly, this is what most will recognize as a puppy mill, where puppies are treated as property and survival depends on staying useful to humans. After a hunter named Egor adopts her, Bella finally experiences stability while learning to track scents during forest hunts beside him. That life ends suddenly when Egor dies, leaving Bella alone on the streets of Chicago, where she survives beside a homeless boy named Alex, beneath bridges and near traffic intersections. Following another loss, Bella enters an animal shelter and passes through foster homes, failed adoptions, and temporary families while searching for a place where she truly belongs. Her journey eventually leads her to Robert, Lana, their daughter Vlada, and a tiny Chihuahua named Jett, forcing Bella to decide whether trust is still possible after a lifetime of abandonment, survival, and repeated reinvention.

Have tissues on hand when reading Lana Stasek’s Bella: Beyond the Bark, because you are definitely going to need them. Stasek transforms a beagle’s life into an intimate first-person account shaped through loneliness, attachment to others, and the longing to be wanted after repeated abandonment. Every experience has a genuinely deeper intimacy, which is often heartbreaking. Her confusion inside the veterinary clinic after trusting hands suddenly caused pain had me in tears. Later, when Bella realizes the family preparing to move has packed every possession except her belongings absolutely broke my heart. Still, Bella is spectacularly strong and courageous. Her behavior changes naturally across the years, but worry not, we see her grow into herself. I love Queen, a Maine Coon cat, who has an unusual dignity despite all she’s been through, too. I especially appreciated the quiet authority she maintains inside the house and her gradual acceptance of Bella. Stasek breathes life into every setting, from Chicago’s freezing underpasses to a burning house. Readers who adore animal-centered fiction will connect strongly with this novel, especially those who enjoyed The Art of Racing in the Rain or A Dog’s Purpose. Very highly recommended.”
